Lisa Ann Crouse was last heard from in early November 1997 while staying at a home in Romney, West Virginia. On November 2, Lisa made a phone call to her family, sounding frightened and asking for help. She mentioned concerns for her safety and said someone was coming home who might harm her. An hour later, she called again, this time sounding calmer, and told them everything was fine. Lisa said she was planning to cook dinner and would be in touch. She was never heard from again. According to reports, an argument may have taken place shortly before her disappearance. Despite ongoing investigations and the passage of time, no sign of Lisa has ever been found, and her case remains open.

Behind the Scenes of the Project
On February 24, 2025, we submitted our first FOIA request to the West Virginia State Police. What came back was not information, but absence, they reported having no records at all.
We tried again, this time through the Romney Detachment. Incident report paperwork was sent, completed, and returned. Still, no answers. When we called on March 25, the lead investigator informed us that the case was considered active and therefore exempt from disclosure.
On April 1, we submitted a final request to the Hampshire County Sheriff’s Office. Their response arrived ten days later: they had no information. Their usage of past tense wording suggested the case was no longer under investigation in Hampshire County.
Each reply brought more frustration than clarity, leaving us to piece together a story the system no longer seems willing to tell.
