James Darren Mathis was last seen on the evening of December 12, 2013, at his residence in Huntington, West Virginia. His wife reported that they went to bed around 9:00 p.m., but when she awoke at approximately 1:30 a.m., he was no longer in the house. His personal belongings, including his wallet and cellphone, were left behind. ​

Shortly after, at 2:14 a.m. on December 13, Cabell County 911 received a call about an abandoned vehicle on the 31st Street Bridge. Officers arrived to find James's car unoccupied, with no sign of him nearby. ​

Search efforts were initiated, including assistance from the U.S. Coast Guard and the West Virginia National Guard, who conducted aerial searches. Despite these efforts, no trace of James has been found.

James was known to be a happy and thoughtful individual, with no known mental health issues. His sudden disappearance has left his family and community searching for answers. ​
