Cassie Renee Sheetz was last seen late in the evening on March 11, 2021, near the top of Spruce Knob in the Monongahela National Forest, Pendleton County, West Virginia. She was 24 years old.

Cassie had been hiking with two companions. After reaching the summit, the group started down Huckleberry Trail, but along the way, they became separated in the darkness. In the early morning hours that followed, both companions eventually made it out of the woods alone. Cassie never did. A search was launched, but no sign of her was found in the immediate aftermath.

At the time she went missing, Cassie was believed to be wearing camouflage pants and a hoodie, based on a photo reportedly taken earlier that day.

Months later, remains were discovered deep within the area where Cassie had last been seen. With them were clothing and keys matching what Cassie had been wearing and carrying that night. Investigators, her family, and the media all believe the remains are hers.

According to the lead investigator, Trooper Kevin Raymond, the evidence leaves little doubt. An anthropologist’s report also found no signs of foul play or trauma. Once DNA results are finalized, authorities plan to formally close the case, and no charges are expected to be filed.

However, despite nearly three years passing, Cassie's case remains officially open. The reason is not because of uncertainty — it is because the final DNA confirmation from the Medical Examiner’s Office is still pending. Neither investigators nor Cassie's family have been given an explanation for the delay, leaving them to wait in a painful kind of limbo.

Though the final answers have not yet come, Cassie's memory remains a steady light for those who love her.
