Cameron LeRoy Bowers was 54 years old when he disappeared from Martinsburg, West Virginia, on August 19, 1990. His family had taken him to a local hospital that day out of concern for his well-being, as he had been struggling emotionally in the years following a cancer diagnosis. After stepping outside the hospital to smoke a cigarette, Cameron walked away and was never seen again.
When he failed to make contact with loved ones, concern quickly grew, and he was soon reported missing. Despite the passage of time, no sign of Cameron has ever been found. Few public details have been released regarding his disappearance, and his case remains unsolved. More than three decades later, those who knew and loved him are still searching for answers.

Behind the Scenes of the Project
A FOIA request was submitted to the Martinsburg City Police Department, and we were grateful to receive a prompt and thorough response. As someone who lives in the area, this case feels especially close, reminding us how quickly someone can vanish, even in the places we know best.
The records revealed that Cameron had sought help and briefly visited City Hospital before walking away. He was last seen stepping outside, and from that point forward, no one has been able to confirm what happened.
While there are indications that he may have been in a vulnerable state, his body has never been recovered and the lack of resolution remains difficult to understand.
The documents included several photographs, which led us to contact NAMUS with a request to update his profile. They responded quickly and asked for additional materials, which have since been submitted. The photo that is pictured on his profile is the same one found in the FOIA documentation.
Even when the answers are incomplete, the cooperation from local departments and continued support from national databases help ensure these stories remain seen and remembered.
